Excellent initiative, I really like what I'm reading. Especially since
it's located nearby, in a neighboring country!

However, I can only log onto IVANA:: and HORSE:: (via telnet) and when
I log onto either as "NEWUSER" the procedure seems to fail:

You must set "vt100" explicite, in your terminal settings, then it should
work. Xterm etc. don't work, and it is a bug, not a feature. :-)

VT100 emulation is what I always use. Maybe you could include a
terminal inquiry ("$ SET TERMINAL /INQUIRE") routine or simply force
the NEWUSER procedure to have it set to VT100 ("$ SET TERMINAL /VT100")
in the LOGIN.COM or so? Because, I think, despite having specifically
configured PuTTY to do 'VT100+' emulation (I'll try from a DECterm
soon) to do VT100 emulation, it somehow doesn't detect it correctly.

:-)
Neither PuTTY identifying itself as a "vt220", nor classic DEC Terminal
emulators (like VTstar from the freeware CD) work - they all give the
error message reported by MG.

When I connect to one of my VMS nodes (an AlphaServer 1200) with VTstar,
I have these settings:

KERNEL> sho term
Terminal: _VTA38: Device_Type: VT300_Series Owner: Garfield
Physical terminal: _TNA39: Username: HANS
Remote Port Info: Host: 10.0.0.67 Port: 1707

Input: 9600 LFfill: 0 Width: 132 Parity: None
Output: 9600 CRfill: 0 Page: 40

yes, it's a *large* VT300 :-)

I can SET HOST, telnet or SSH to any other VMS node in my lab (VAX,
Alpha, IA64) without problems, but

KERNEL> telnet horse.marway.org
%TELNET-I-TRYING, Trying ... 145.253.97.114

Looking at Hoff's website, you should upgrade to the latest version of
NEWUSER (V2.1-0) and require folks to register for a new account, reset
passwords etc. on one of the Alphas.

I do hope you have a common SYSUAF across the cluster, so once the
account is created it can be used on the VAXen as well.

Hi,

I'm setting up my HobbyCluster again! The Cluster has four Nodes now:

STELLA, IVANA, HORSE and BARNEY. The NEWUSER-System from Stephen Hoffman
(HoffmanLabs LLC) is disabled now, and the potential and really interested
Users must or should contact me directly via e-Mail first. Please include
a wished Username (max. 6-7 lower-case characters... and on which host you
want to stay :-)

-------------------
My daily e-Mail is:
***@melanie.marway.org
As Subject you should use "Free Account"...
-------------------------------------------

Some benchmarks of my machines in the cluster:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
STELLA: VUPs = 273 Elapsed time = 00:00:01.07 (DS10) [64 Bit]
IVANA: VUPs = 176 Elapsed time = 00:00:01.66 (PWS433AU) [64 Bit]
HORSE: VUPs = 13 Elapsed time = 00:00:20.98 (MV3100-M80) [32 Bit]
BARNEY: VUPs = 5 Elapsed time = 00:00:54.97 (VS3100-M38) [32 Bit]
--------------------------------------------------------------------

All four Node hav' [EXPECTED_VOTES=1], IVANA has [VOTES=1] and the rest
[VOTES=0] in SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT

That's correct so? :-)

FYI,
SYSUAF.DAT, RIGHTSLIST.DAT etc. are not clustered yet! A Quorum Disk
is planned... Any suggestions?

Hope to hear soon from you,

While perhaps interesting for testing things, learning etc, the power of

I presume you mean that you don't have common files yet. A quorum disk

On VMS 7.1:

$ mcr authorize help add parameter

ADD

Parameter

newusername

Specifies the name of the user record to be included in the
SYSUAF. The newusername parameter is a string of 1 to 12
alphanumeric characters and can contain underscores. Although
dollar signs are permitted, they are usually reserved for system
names.

Avoid using fully numeric user names (for example, 89560312). A
fully numeric user name cannot receive a corresponding identifier
because fully numeric identifiers are not permitted.

If both IVANA and STELLA have VOTES=1, then the cluster will hang if
either node goes down. If both have VOTES=1 *and* you have a quorum
disk, the cluster will stay up if either one (but not both) of these
nodes goes down (as long as the quorum disk remains up).

If all four nodes have VOTES=1 then the cluster will remain active if
any single node goes down, but will hang if more than one node goes
down.

In any case, the nodes with VOTES=0 can enter and leave the cluster
with impunity.

How is your storage connected? Since I only have storage connected to
individual systems, I put all my important cluster files --- SYSUAF,
RIGHTSLIST, etc. --- on only one node, gave that node one vote and the
other nodes 0. If that important node is up, the cluster can run.

Have fun!

Then BOTH have to be in the cluster, otherwise it hangs.

The smallest "useful" cluster is with three voting nodes.

A quorum disk is needed only in a two-node cluster.
A cluster in which exactly two nodes vote, to be precise, I think.

Actually, a two-node cluster with shared storage.

I've seen several NI-based clusters with horrible votes/expected-votes
values. Doesn't matter if you don't have shared storage, right?
